Rep. Jason Overstreet demands Western Washington University president’s resignation
State Rep. Jason Overstreet is calling for the resignation of Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard after comments he made equating a "white" student body and faculty amounting to "failure."
“President Shepard’s continued and unflinching adherence to an intellectually void ideology that divides on skin color rather than uniting based on the content of character demands that he apologize to the students, potential students, and taxpayers who fund Western Washington University,” said Overstreet, R-Lynden. “He should resign immediately from his university president position.”
Campusreform.org reported the story, providing links to the repeated comments that have been made in writing and on video.
Shepard is quoted in a recent blog post “In the decades ahead, should we be as white as we are today, we will be relentlessly driven toward mediocrity; or, become a sad shadow of our current self.”
The university also put out a recent survey asking “How do we make sure that in future years we are not as white as we are today?”
The president has made similar comments in the past. In a 2012 speech Shepard said, “Every year, from this stage and at this time, you have heard me say that, if in decades ahead, we are as white as we are today, we will have failed as a university.”
