House approves ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day’ bill
Date Recorded: Feb. 24, 2013
Run Time: 60 seconds
SUGGESTED LEAD: Lawmakers in the state House of Representatives have given their approval to a bill that would set aside a day of recognition to finally welcome home Vietnam veterans. John Sattgast reports from Olympia.
Sattgast: Nearly 38 years ago when the final troops returned home from Vietnam, they were treated unjustly by protesters as baby killers and war mongers. Representative Norma Smith of Clinton says it’s time to give these men and women the recognition they deserve. She’s co-sponsored legislation that would designate March 30th as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.”
Smith: “And we went to the Marine Corps ball. And we left there, and I was so proud of my young aviator and the work that he had done. He and those with whom he served as the war was ending. And we walked into a restaurant and we were scorned. No member of our U.S. military should ever have to experience that moment.”
Sattgast: 10th District Republican State Representative Norma Smith. House Bill 1319 passed the House unanimously and was sent to the Senate for further consideration. John Sattgast, Olympia.
