Rep. Jim McCune tours
Voights Creek Hatchery
2nd District lawmaker says facility important for
local economy, state fisheries
Rep. Jim McCune,
R-Graham, toured the Voights Creek Hatchery on Sept. 21. The 2nd
District lawmaker met with Manager Sherman Davis.
McCune
believes the 91-year-old hatchery, which produces around
800,000 yearling Coho and 1.6 million Chinook each year, is vital to the
Puyallup River and fisheries in the Puget Sound area. The hatchery has
experienced damage due to past flooding and was under the threat of
closure during state budget negotiations in the 2009 legislative
session.
"We cannot allow the state to close the Voights Creek
Hatchery for any reason," said McCune, who worked
with other local leaders and state lawmakers earlier this year to
preserve funding in the state budget. "This facility means so much to
our local economy, its workers and our state."
